ChatGPT's APIs are out and unleashed!
Developers can now integrate ChatGPT and Whisper models into their apps and products through APIs.
ChatGPT API released
A few days back, OpenAI introduced APIs for ChatGPT and Whisper along with exclusive resources for enterprise clients.
The API is powered by the same AI model as the widely popular ChatGPT, known as "gpt-3.5-turbo." This text-generating model is currently the most powerful one offered by OpenAI through its API suite. The "turbo" designation signifies an optimized and more responsive version of GPT-3.5 that OpenAI has been quietly testing specifically for ChatGPT.
It takes us a while to get these APIs to a certain quality level. I think it’s kind of this, like, just being able to meet the demand and the scale.
- Greg Brockman, the president and chairman of OpenAI
Priced at $0.002 per 1,000 tokens, or about 750 words, Brockman claims that the API can drive a range of experiences, including “non-chat” applications.
Snap, Quizlet, Instacart, and Shopify are among the early adopters.
What about Whisper API?
Whisper is a model that incorporates Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and is capable of transcribing multiple languages and translating them into English. It supports various formats such as m4a, mp3, mp4, mpeg, mpga, wav, and webm.
In September 2022, OpenAI made its Whisper model freely available.
The cost is $0.006 per minute. It is worth noting that Whisper was trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual and multitask data collected from the web.
Citius, Altius, Fortius (and cheaper, too)

What does opening APIs mean for us, builders and creators?
Hobbyists who used to operate in a licensing gray area (before the public API) with their tinkering can now transform their activities into fully-fledged businesses.
Which was described well by Wired as a potential “start of a new AI gold rush.”
