🇮🇹 ChatGPT is banned in Italy over privacy concerns
On Friday, Italy temporarily banned the use of ChatGPT, marking the first time a Western government has taken such action against the chatbot. According to the country's data protection authority, the company unlawfully gathered personal data from users.
Italy's recent ban on ChatGPT highlights the policy challenges that have emerged for developers of advanced AI technologies. While the program has impressed users with its impressive capabilities such as drafting essays, engaging in human-like conversations, and even writing computer code, it has also sparked concerns over issues such as the spread of misinformation, its impact on employment, and broader societal risks (Should I write about in a separate post? Tell me in comments below).
Italian regulators have instructed OpenAI to prevent internet users in the country from accessing ChatGPT until the company provides additional information. OpenAI has been given a 20-day deadline to submit the necessary material and potential solutions to the agency, after which a final decision will be made regarding the product's future in Italy.
The decision comes after a data breach on March 20th, which led to the exposure of user conversations and payment information. The agency has warned that OpenAI may be liable for a fine of up to 20 million euros (about $22 million) or 4% of its global annual revenue.
This is the first instance of a government taking such action against the chatbot. In other countries like China, North Korea, Russia, and Iran, the service is unavailable because OpenAI has chosen not to make it accessible.
Sam Altman reacted pretty fast (plus he probably misses 🍕 like hell).
We actively work to reduce personal data in training our A.I. systems like ChatGPT because we want our A.I. to learn about the world, not about private individuals? We also believe that A.I. regulation is necessary.
